Emirates NBD will run OpenAI’s GPT models on infrastructure inside the UAE, the bank and OpenAI announced on 19 October. They describe it as the first bank in the Middle East and North Africa to do so, and the models will be used for customer, risk and compliance work.

Key takeaways

Emirates NBD and OpenAI announced on 19 October 2026 that the bank will run OpenAI’s GPT models on infrastructure inside the UAE. They describe it as the first bank in the Middle East and North Africa to do so.

The bank plans to use the models for customer engagement, risk and compliance analytics, automating workflows and employee productivity, connected to its internal systems and data.

The companies say in-country processing supports data residency, privacy and resilience. They name no regulator, rule, model, hosting provider or go-live date.

What the bank plans to do

The bank says it will apply the models in four areas: customer engagement across its digital channels, risk and compliance analytics, automating knowledge-heavy workflows, and employee productivity. It will connect them to its internal systems, interfaces and enterprise data, and expects faster digital service development and more personalised offerings. It also names risk monitoring and financial crime controls among the benefits.

Miguel Rio-Tinto

Miguel Rio-Tinto, the bank’s group chief digital and information officer, said:

“AI is not an experiment for us, it is a core capability that will define how we build, serve and scale.”

Farouk El Hamzawi, head of enterprise at OpenAI MENA, said the bank is “setting a benchmark” for how financial institutions can deploy AI securely and responsibly at scale.

Emirates NBD serves more than 25 million active customers in 13 countries and had assets of AED 1.3 trillion at the end of June, according to the companies’ announcement.

What “in-country” means here

Data residency covers where a customer’s information is stored. Inference residency covers where the model runs. OpenAI added the UAE to its inference residency programme on 12 August, alongside the US and Europe. At launch it supported only GPT-5.2, and some features were unavailable. Authentication and analytics can still run outside the UAE.

The regulatory angle

The companies say in-country inference supports data residency, privacy and operational resilience, which they describe as expectations under local regulation. They don’t name a regulator or a rule.

The Central Bank of the UAE launched a sovereign financial cloud with Core42 in February for licensed institutions. Marie Chowdhry, a fintech partner at law firm Pinsent Masons, said of that cloud that “data residency, supervisory access and resilience obligations are becoming increasingly operationalised and standardised.” The central bank’s guidance on AI says institutions relying on third-party or cloud providers should check the provider’s governance, security and data-protection practices, according to its rulebook.

What’s next

The announcement gives no go-live date or rollout schedule. It doesn’t say where the servers are hosted, whether they sit on the central bank’s sovereign cloud, what customer data will be sent to the models, or how many staff and customers are affected. It publishes no cost or performance figures.

FAQs

What did Emirates NBD and OpenAI announce?

The bank will run OpenAI’s GPT models on infrastructure inside the UAE. The companies call it the first such deployment by a bank in MENA.

What is inference residency?

Where an AI model runs and processes a request, as opposed to where data is stored. OpenAI offers it in the UAE, the US and Europe.

Will customer data stay in the UAE?

The companies say processing inside the UAE supports data residency and privacy. They haven’t published details on data retention, storage or training, and OpenAI says some functions such as authentication and analytics can run outside the UAE.

Which OpenAI models will Emirates NBD use?

It hasn’t said. OpenAI’s UAE inference service supported only GPT-5.2 when it launched in August.

When will it go live?

No date has been given.

Editor’s Take: Emirates NBD has announced a plan with no date, model or hosting provider attached. OpenAI’s UAE service supported a single model at launch in August, so which models the bank can run in-country is the first detail to watch. The companies cite data residency expectations without naming a rule, even though the Central Bank has its own sovereign cloud for licensed institutions. The announcement doesn’t say how the two fit together.
